One thing that no one has mentioned thus far is the recent change in bankruptcy laws which is going to have a dramatic effect on an "upside down" FB's ability to just "walk away" from a home. Many would-be chapter 7 filers will be forced into chapter 13 and be saddled with at least some of their debt. I guess FBs should consider themselves lucky if they are only stuck with oweing the difference between their mortgage value and the amount the bank gets from the sale/auction of the home.

Also, I live in Jersey City, NJ and the home as ATM is not a phenomenon unique to California---there's plenty of that going on out here too.

The reason we left California is because we were too far from family. We have small children, and it's hard raising them without grandparents nearby. As far as the financial gain, that was a nice side-effect. We could afford our life in CA because we bought before the bubble, and if family had been there rather than in CO, we would still be there. I totally understand your wife's feelings on this one.

Thanks for updating us. Was asking because I was planning a similiar move in January but chickened out. Trying to convince my wife to sell or Southern CA home to move elsewhere was tough. I see it as a financial move for the family but all my wife can see is being far away from mom and sisters. Too many emotions attached.

The status is that we moved to Maryland for my husband's job. The job hasn't turned out the way he anticipated it would. It's not their fault or ours. Sometimes things just don't work out. It wasn't a mistake to leave CA. Our mistake was coming this far east, rather than going straight to the place we wanted to end up. It's going to be a rather expensive detour when all is said and done.

We are currently looking for jobs closer to family in the west, although it won't be California. Real estate in our area of Maryland is stable, not rising or falling, but houses are on the market longer. Most are in the 30-day to 60-day range. No bidding wars to speak of, and owners are spending more time preparing houses for market. If all goes well, we will back west by summer. We're certainly hopeful, anyway.

Karen,
Are you the one that cashed out from CA and moved to VA? (I know it was East Coast). If so, I remember things didnt pan out like you liked and had to or trying to get out of your new home. If you are the same person, whats the status?
